Supplications after the daily prayers
(Known as “Taqibaat”)
Taqibaat for Dhor Prayer (Dua after Dhor Prayer):
- In the supplications after the Dhor prayer, it is recited:
"There is no deity except Allah, the Almighty, the Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the Noble Throne. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, I ask You for the causes of Your mercy, the determinants of Your forgiveness, the gain from all righteousness, and safety from all sins. O Allah, let there be no sin except that You have forgiven it, no concern except that You have relieved it, no illness except that You have healed it, no flaw except that You have concealed it, no provision except that You have expanded it, no fear except that You have secured it, no evil except that You have averted it, and no need pleasing to You and good for me except that You have fulfilled it, O Most Merciful of the merciful, Amen, Lord of the worlds."
- It is also recited:
"O Allah, if my sins are great, then You are greater, if my negligence is large, then You are larger, if my stinginess persists, then You are more generous. O Allah, forgive my great sins with Your great pardon, cover my many negligence with Your manifest generosity, and eradicate my stinginess with Your plentiful bounty. O Allah, every blessing we have is from You, there is no deity except You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You."
- It is narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) that after the Dohr prayer, Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) would say:
"O Allah, I draw near to You with Your generosity and nobility, and I draw near to You through Muhammad, Your servant and messenger, and I draw near to You through Your close angels, and Your sent prophets, and by You. O Allah, You are rich and I am needy towards You, You are self-sufficient and I am the needy. You have overlooked my stumbles, and covered my sins, so fulfill my need today, and do not punish me with the ugliness of what You know of me, but let Your pardon and generosity encompass me."
Then he would go into prostration and say:
"O You of piety and O You of forgiveness, O Good, O Merciful, You are kinder to me than my father and mother and all of creation, accept my supplication, grant my request, have mercy on my voice, for You have removed various afflictions from me."
Taqibaat for Asr Prayer (Dua after Asr Prayer):
- I seek forgiveness from Allah, the One whom there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the Possessor of Majesty and Honor. I ask for forgiveness from God, the only deity, who is the Living, the Sustainer, Merciful, and Majestic, full of generosity. And I ask Him to accept my repentance, the repentance of a humble servant, subdued, in need, distressed, destitute, seeking refuge, Who owns neither benefit nor harm for himself, nor death, nor life, nor resurrection.
- O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a heart that does not humble, And from knowledge that does not benefit, from a prayer that does not ascend, and from a supplication that is not heard. O Allah, I ask You for ease after hardship, relief after distress, and abundance after difficulty. O Allah, any blessing we have is from You, there is no deity except You, I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.
- It is narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) that whoever seeks forgiveness seventy times after the Asr prayer, God will forgive seven hundred of his sins. (3)
Taqibaat for Maghrib Prayer (Dua after Maghrib Prayer):
Sheikh says in "Misbah al-Mutahajjid": After the Maghrib prayer and following the recitation of the Tasbihat of Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her), you say:
- Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who have believed, send your blessings on him and greet him with a worthy greeting. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad the Prophet, and upon his progeny, and bless his household.
- Then you say seven times:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and there is no power or strength except through Allah, the Exalted, the Great.
- You say three times:
All praise is due to Allah, who does what He wills, and no one else can do what they will.
- After that, you say:
Glory be to You, there is no deity except You. Forgive all my sins, for no one else can forgive all sins except You.
- Then you perform the voluntary prayers after Maghrib Prayer, which consist of four units (two units per Salam), and you do not speak between Maghrib and its voluntary prayers. The late Sheikh Tusi has said, it has been narrated that in the first Rak'ah after Al-Fatiha, one should recite Surah "Qul Ya Ayyuhal Kafiroon," and in the second Rak'ah, Surah "Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad." For the next two Rak'ahs, one may recite any Surah they wish. It has also been narrated that Imam Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him) in the third Rak'ah after Al-Fatiha, would recite the first verses of Surah Hadid up to the sixth verse (and He is All-Knowing of the breasts), and in the fourth Rak'ah after Al-Fatiha, he would recite the end of Surah Hashr from "Law Anzalna Hadha al-Qur'an 'Ala Jabalin" to the end of the Surah.
It is recommended in the last prostration of the voluntary prayers each night, especially on Friday nights, to say seven times:
O Allah, I ask You by Your Noble Face, Your Great Name, and Your Eternal Sovereignty, to send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, and to forgive my great sin, for none can forgive the great but the Great.
- After performing the voluntary prayers, the following supplications are also prescribed:
a) Whatever Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah (10 times).
b) O Allah, I ask You for the causes of Your Mercy, the determinants of Your Forgiveness, salvation from the Fire, and from every affliction, and success in Paradise and Your pleasure in the abode of peace, and the neighbourhood of Your Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, O Allah, any blessing we have is from You, there is no deity except You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.
7. After performing the voluntary prayers and supplications, you perform a prostration of gratitude, and the minimum gratitude prostration is to say:شُکْراً شُکْراً شُکْراً "thank you" three times; as mentioned in the section on prostration of gratitude
8. It has been narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) that once the Maghrib prayer is concluded, place your hand on your forehead and say three times:
In the name of Allah, who there is no deity except Him, the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, O Allah, remove from me worry, grief, and sorrow.
Salat al-Ghufaylah:
Salat al-Ghufaylah is prayed between the Maghrib and Isha prayers. It consists of two units (rak'ahs), and is performed with the intention of seeking closeness to Allah.
In the first rak'ah, after reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, you recite:
"Remember the man of the fish [Prophet Yunus], when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree anything upon him. Then he cried out in the darkness, saying, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers."(Quran 21:87)
And in the second rak'ah, after reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, you recite:
"And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows whatever is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. Nor is there a grain in the darkness of neither the earth, nor anything fresh or dry, but that it is written in a clear record." (Quran 6:59)
"After that, you raise your hands for Qunoot and in Qunoot you say:"
"O Allah, I ask You by the keys of the unseen which no one knows except You, to send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, and to do with me as such and such." In place of the words "such and such," you state your need (for example, you might say: "and to grant me the best of this world and the hereafter"). After that, you recite:
"O Allah, You are the guardian of my blessings and capable of my requests. You know my need, so I ask You by the right of Muhammad and his family, peace be upon him and them, to fulfill my need." According to a narration from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), whoever does this and asks Allah for their need, Allah will fulfill their need.
Taqibaat for Isha Prayer (Dua after Isha Prayer):
In the aftermath of the Isha prayer, the following verses and supplications are prescribed:
- Recite Surah Al-Qadr seven times.
- Then you recite:
"O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they overshadow, Lord of the seven earths and all they bear, Lord of the devils and all they lead astray, and Lord of the winds and all they scatter, O Allah, Lord of everything, God of everything, and Sovereign of everything, You are Allah, the All-Powerful over everything, You are Allah, the First, nothing is before You, and You are the Last, nothing is after You, You are the Manifest; nothing is above You, and You are the Hidden; nothing is beneath You. Lord of Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil, God of Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, I ask You to send blessings on Muhammad and his family, and to take me under Your mercy, and do not let anyone from Your creation who I cannot withstand have dominion over me, O Allah, endear me to Yourself and make me honored among people, and keep me safe from the evil of the devils among jinn and men, O Lord of the Worlds, and send blessings on Muhammad and his family. Then ask Allah for whatever you desire.
- Then you perform a prostration of thanksgiving.
- At the end, perform the Witr prayer (the optional prayer after Isha prayer).
Taqibaat for Fajr Prayer (Supplications after Morning Prayer):
Supplications following the Morning Prayer are more emphasized and more extensive compared to other prayers, with numerous hadiths highlighting their virtues. However, as we have mentioned before, everyone should perform these supplications to the extent possible according to their condition.
- Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: "Remembering Allah after the morning prayer until sunrise is even more beneficial for sustenance than going on a trade journey."
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) said: "Whoever sits in his prayer place from dawn until sunrise, engaged in supplications, Allah will protect him from Hellfire."
- Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: "Satan disperses his forces from dawn until sunrise on Earth, and similarly disperses his nighttime forces from sunset until the redness of the evening disappears. Therefore, the holy Prophet said to remember Allah greatly during these times, as Satan tries to distract humans from remembering Allah then."
- Authentically reported from Imam Ridha (peace be upon him), when he was in Khorasan, he would sit in his prayer place after the Morning Prayer until sunrise and perform supplications. Then, his toothbrushes would be brought to him, and he would brush his teeth and then engage in reciting the Holy Quran.
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him & his progeny) stated: anyone who remains in his prayer spot after the morning prayer until sunrise, engaging in supplications and remembering Allah, will receive the reward of performing the Hajj pilgrimage.
- In a divine narration, it is stated that Allah said: "O son of Adam! Remember Me for a while after morning and also for a while after Asr (afternoon), and I will suffice for all your matters."
Prayers, remembrances, and verses recommended after Morning Prayer:
- Sheikh Sadooq authentically narrates from Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) that whoever performs Istighfar (seeks forgiveness) seventy times after Morning Prayer and says:
"I ask forgiveness of Allah, my Lord, and I turn to Him in repentance," Allah will forgive him.
- Sheikh Sadooq with an authentic chain from Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) narrates that whoever recites Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter of Sincerity) eleven times after morning prayer will not commit a sin that day, no matter how much Satan tries. (8)
The late Sheikh Kulayni with an authentic chain from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) has narrated that whoever says the following Supplication, one hundred times after morning prayer, will not see any misfortune that day:
"What Allah wills happens; there is no power or strength except through Allah, the High, the Great,"
This narration has also been mentioned by Sheikh Tusi and other scholars in their books of supplications.
- It is narrated from Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) that whoever recites Surah Al-Qadr (Chapter of Power) seven times after dawn will receive blessings from seventy rows of angels and seventy prayers for mercy will be made for him. (11)
- Imam Musa al-Kazim (peace be upon him) narrated that a man came to him complaining about his job and said that whatever he undertook brought him no profit and his needs were not being met (as all doors seemed closed to him). Imam (peace be upon him) advised him to say after morning prayer ten times:
"Glory be to Allah the Great, and with His praise, I seek forgiveness of Allah and ask from His bounty."
The man says that he persisted with this practice for a short time and his difficulties were resolved.
This story has been recorded in the book "Al-Kafi" and "Makarim al-Akhlaq" that a man told Imam Musa al-Kazim (peace be upon him): "Teach me a prayer that is comprehensive for both this world and the hereafter, and also brief and easy," to which the Imam taught him the same supplication and instructed him to recite it after morning prayer until sunrise; the man did so regularly, and consequently, his situation improved.
- Abdullah bin Sinan reported that he approached Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) who said, "Would you like me to teach you a prayer that if recited, Allah will settle your debt and improve your situation?" When he expressed his eagerness, the Imam instructed him to say after morning prayer:
"I place my trust in the Living, the Sustainer, who does not die, and praise be to Allah, who has not taken a son or partner in the kingdom, nor has He any protector due to weakness, and magnify Him with a great magnification." "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from misery and poverty, from the dominance of debt and illness, and ask You to help me fulfill Your right and the rights of people."
- Allama Majlisi writes that the late "Tabarsi" and "Kaf'ami" and other scholars have narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him & his progeny) that he said to his companions: "Can you not undertake a pledge from Allah every morning and evening?" When they asked how to do so, he said: "Whoever recites this prayer, it is sealed and placed under the Divine Throne, and on the Day of Resurrection, a caller will call: 'Where are those who have a pledge with the Merciful God?' And those who have recited this prayer will be given their pledge and with it, enter Paradise."
The late Sheikh Tusi has included this prayer (and pledge) in the supplications following the Morning Prayer:
"O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, I pledge to You in this world that You are Allah, there is no deity but You, Alone without partner, and that Muhammad, may Allah bless him and his family, is Your servant and messenger."
"O Allah, bless Muhammad and his pure family, never leave me to myself not even for the blink of an eye, nor to anyone of Your creation, for if You leave me to them, You would distance me from good and bring me close to evil. O Lord, I trust only in Your mercy, so bless Muhammad and his pure family, and keep a pledge with You on my behalf to be delivered to me on the Day of Resurrection, for You do not fail in Your promises."
- It is narrated that whoever send following blessings (Salawat), for hundred times after morning prayer, Allah will preserve him from the fire of Hell:
"O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,"
In the supplications after the Morning Prayer, these matters are also included:
- You say ten times:
"O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and his family, the pleased successors, with the best of Your blessings, and bless them with the finest of Your blessings, and peace be upon them and their souls and bodies, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings."
- Reading this Salawat, which has been narrated to have great merit when recited after the Friday noon and afternoon prayers, and Sheikh Tusi has included it in the supplications after the morning prayer:
"O Allah, sustain me as You sustained Ali ibn Abi Talib, and cause me to die as Ali ibn Abi Talib died, peace be upon him."
- Then you say:
"I begin the morning, O Allah, taking refuge in Your inviolable protection, which cannot be breached or bypassed, from the harm of every oppressor and assailant, from all those You have created and all else of Your creation, both silent and speaking, within a shield from every fear, clad in the garment woven from the allegiance to the family of Your Prophet, shielded from every harm-seeker by the impenetrable wall of sincerity in acknowledging their rights, and clinging to their bond, certain that the truth is with them, for them, and about them, I befriend those they befriend and estrange those they estrange."
"So, O Allah, by them, protect me from the evil of everything I fear, O the Magnificent, I have kept the enemies away from me by the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Indeed, We have placed barriers before and behind them, and covered them so they do not see."
This prayer can be recited every morning and evening, and it is the same prayer that Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) recited on the night of Hijrat (the night he slept in the Prophet's bed to protect the Prophet from the Quraysh of Makkah). (22)
- According to a narration from Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (peace be upon them), It is reccommeded to say the following dhikr, after morning prayer one hundred times:
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, there is neither power nor strength except through Allah, the High, the Great,"
This remembrance is closer to the Greatest Name of Allah than the blackness of the eye to its whiteness.
- From Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), it is narrated that he said: "Read this prayer for worldly and hereafter matters and for curing eye pain, after morning and Maghrib prayers:
"OAllah, I ask You by the right of Muhammad and his family over You, send blessings on Muhammad and his family, and place light in my vision, insight in my religion, certainty in my heart, and sincerity in my actions, and safety in myself, abundance in my sustenance, and be thankful to You as long as You keep me alive."
- In a narration from Imam Muhammad Taqi (peace be upon him), it is mentioned that he said: "Whoever reads this prayer after the morning prayer, his requests from Allah will be easily granted, and whatever he desires and aims for, Allah will suffice him and fulfill it; this prayer, according to the narration in 'Miftah al-Falah,' is as follows:
"In the name of Allah, and may Allah's blessings be upon Muhammad and his family, and I entrust my affair to Allah, indeed Allah is All-Seeing of His servants, then Allah protected him from the evils of their plot, There is no god but You, glorified are You, indeed I was among the wrongdoers, so We responded to him and saved him from the grief, and thus do We save the believers, Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best guardian, then they returned with a favor from Allah and grace that no evil touched them, What Allah wills, there is no movement nor power except by Allah, what Allah wills not what people will, what Allah wills even if people dislike it, My Lord is sufficient from the ruled, the Creator is sufficient from the created, The Provider is sufficient from the provided, Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, is sufficient for me, He who is sufficient for me is sufficient, He who has always been sufficient for me, He who has been sufficient for me since I existed, Allah is sufficient for me, there is no deity but He, On Him I rely, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne."
- The late 'Haji Noori' in the book 'Dar al-Salam' narrates from his teacher, the devout scholar, the late Haj Molla Fath Ali Sultan Abadi that the respected sage Akhund Molla Muhammad Sadegh Iraqi was in extreme difficulty and distress, to the extent that no relief was forthcoming. One night, he dreamt that he was in a place where a large tent was erected. He asked whose tent it was, and was told it was the secure refuge and helper of the destitute, Imam Mahdi, the awaited Imam (may Allah hasten his return). Molla Muhammad Sadegh Iraqi hurried to the Imam's service and expressed his life's difficulties and distress to the Imam, asking the noble one to teach him a prayer to alleviate his problems and sorrow. The Imam directed him towards a tent where one of the Sayyids was present. Akhund Molla Muhammad Sadegh left the Imam's service and entered the tent indicated by the Imam; he saw a noble and esteemed Sayyid, Agha Sayyid Muhammad Sultan Abadi, sitting on a prayer mat, engaged in supplication and remembrance. Akhund greeted him, and recounted his situation to him. The Sayyid also taught him a prayer for relief in his affairs and expansion of his sustenance.
Akhund Molla Muhammad Sadegh woke from his dream and realized that he knew the prayer well, although he had not previously been acquainted with Sayyid Muhammad Sultan Abadi. After this dream, he approached the Sayyid, saw him in the same state as in the dream, saw the noble on his prayer mat, busy with remembrance and seeking forgiveness. He greeted him, and the Sayyid responded. Then the Sayyid smiled, seemingly aware of the incident. Akhund asked for a prayer to resolve his problems, and the Sayyid recited the same prayer he had taught in the dream. Akhund Molla Muhammad Sadegh recited this prayer, and within a short period, he emerged from the difficulties of life and attained comfort and ease.
The prayer was as follows: First: After dawn, he should place his hand over his chest and say seventy times:یا فتّاح "Ya Fattah" (O Opener of ways). And Second: He should recite this prayer, which in Al-Kafi is mentioned for resolving difficulties and healing the sick:
"There is no power nor strength except through Allah, the High, the Great, I rely on the Living who does not die, and praise be to Allah who has taken neither a consort nor a son and has no partner in sovereignty, nor has He any ally out of humiliation, and magnify Him greatly."
